How often should I float?
If there’s one question we get more than any other at Flow Revive, it’s how often should I float? Unfortunately, there’s not one hard and fast rule for everyone, but we highly recommend if you’ve never booked a float tank session before, you should try at least three times to get good at it.
You wouldn’t think climbing into a tank of body temperature, salty water and laying there in the dark could be hard—and it’s not. But to get the full benefit you need to learn to relax, that’s the bit most people find the most difficult.
What to expect the first time you float
As with most people, the first time you float, your brain is trying to make sense of the new environment and the feeling of being sensory deprived. You can’t reach for your smartphone, talk to someone (other than yourself) or flick on a TV. Switching off and unplugging from the world around you is an art form. Sensory deprivation can help with this, but the first time you float it’s unlikely you’re going to truly relax. You may find yourself thinking “What if I drown or they forget I’m in here?” Not to mention, wondering if the tightness in your body is normal as your body starts to relax or making a mental check list of all the things on your list you need to do the minute you leave. If you’re an active relaxer—being busy is your way of relaxing—the art of being alone with only your thoughts may be exceptionally difficult. Like meditation, floating takes a little practice. It make take 20-30 minutes before you’ve processed all the ‘what if’ scenarios in your brain and wonder what you were so worried about in the first place.
Why you need to book more than one float session
Your second float is always better! You know what to expect. This is the session where you normally get more familiar with how you like the tank settings—whether you want the lid open or closed, lights off and on, and whether you want music. You’ve done it once and survive, so you’ll start relaxing a lot sooner.
By your third session, this is where you’re practically a seasoned pro. You know the routine to shower before you float, you’ve got all your settings down pat and now you’re ready for some truly soul refreshing down time—no demands, nowhere to be, just you and your thoughts.
